In celebration of Screen-Free Week (April 30 to May 6), the Beauvoir community will be rediscovering the joys of life beyond the screen. As a part of Screen-Free Week, we are exploring the concepts of inner focus, outer focus, and other focus, which are three essential skills for surviving in a society increasingly dominated by internet-enabled devices.
In the book The Triple Focus: A New Approach to Education, authors Daniel Goleman and Peter Senge describe these three concepts as focusing on ourselves (inner focus), tuning in to others (outer focus), and understanding the larger world (other focus). These concepts are important as we address the issue of screen time with our students and children.
Inner focus speaks to the challenge of teaching self-awareness and self-management. Do students know how to control their devices, can they maintain focus to allow their brain to process the context around them? We guide students to recognize when and how they can be successful learners and realize when it is time to put devices away.
Outer focus refers to the adults in a student’s digital life. Often when adults attempt to limit screen time, they inadvertently send the message that adulthood equals unlimited access to all things digital. In order for students to better understand their device use, the adults in their lives need to model positive social and digital behaviors.
Other focus is a much broader approach to looking at how their actions affect their classroom, classmates, and society in general. By helping students understand the impact of digital screens on the larger community, we can help them build a greater understanding of their actions.
